Coffee at The Park: It Takes a Village

On Tuesday, October 22, Square One World Media held an exclusive evening event at The Pavilion at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg.

The night started with guests coming in, mingling with others, and enjoying a delicious cup of coffee or tea from Más Coffee Co. They were also directed to visit our one-night-only Square One exhibit in the Pavilion art galleries, where guests got a little glimpse of 77 years’ worth of history from 1947 to present day.

During the main event, guests were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at some of our projects. The videos highlighted our producers and technical team, and the effort they put into creating our various projects.

While many people, including our audience, don’t consider the behind-the-scenes aspect of media creation, it’s important to note that a Square One project would not be possible if it weren’t for our production team.

“It’s interesting how it’s more than just one person, and when you put the team together, you’re thinking on different layers.” says Virginia Spence, the host and producer of our new English Indigenous program, A Courageous Heart.

"Does this work for the timing? Does this work for the sound? Does this work for the...?"

“[The producers] work to pull a story out, and we do the behind-the-scenes things creatively and technically,” says Production Manager Grant Hoeppner.

Tales from Cottonwood Trails, our English children’s audio program, requires a collaborative effort from a team of four people: Jordan Evans (producer and voice actor), Eli Melsness (audio editor and mixer), Eric Boorman (sound design specialist), and Stu Hunnable (project manager).

“[To make] a single episode takes much longer than you might think,” says Jordan. “We’re usually about four scripts ahead of time; I have to make sure that I keep ahead of it, so we can get all the editing done of the script, make sure everything is in place, and stuff like that.”

Our Russian-language children’s program, Ella’s Backyard Vlog, has the largest technical team in the Winnipeg studio comprising of Square One employees and volunteers.

“I am very inspired by our team,” says Ella Aleksienkova, the production assistant for the Russian project. “This is a very creative and interesting process. Especially when we come together to create something fun and important.”

Grant says working with a team gives him fulfillment.

“To be able to be used by God to spread His message of love… that is a great value in life,” says Grant.

As the night wound down, guests gathered in the main lobby, talked to some of our staff and production team, and asked questions about Tales from Cottonwood Trails, A Courageous Heart, and Ella’s Backyard Vlog

A similar event was hosted at Clearbrook MB Church in Abbotsford, BC on Thursday, November 21 to in-person and online guests. To watch a playback of the program, visit Clearbrook MB's website here.
