Howard Jolly, the host and producer of our new Indigenous program, Come Sit With Me, recording in our film studio.
Here at Square One World Media, our mission is to spread the Gospel through media—and what better way to share the Good News of Jesus Christ than through video?
Recently, we have launched two new video series for our English-speaking audiences:
Come Sit With Me is a 15-30 minute program hosted by Howard Jolly where he inspires deeper relationship with Christ through scripture, song, and the stories of Indigenous Christians.
The Weekly Well is a three to four minute video series hosted by Scott Koop to encourage and inspire viewers with the Word of God.
While we’ve officially debuted these two programs online, new projects are continually in the works… but what does it take for a program to come to life at Square One?
Production Manager Grant Hoeppner says that ideas sprout when somebody from the audience—and who knows how to communicate to their audience—walks in the door.
“[From there] we do some brainstorming," Hoeppner says, "and try to figure out how we can move the audience from here to there. What’s a creative way to do that?”
After a concept has been established, we record a pilot episode—this is typically a test video
to determine the look and feel of the whole project.
Hoeppner continued, “That usually takes a bit of work—it’s like creating a recipe from scratch.".
The pilot recording gives new producers an idea of what happens behind and in front
of the camera.
“I was kind of nervous,” says Howard Jolly, the host of Come Sit With Me. “I wasn’t used to sitting in a chair [with] a camera being there and trusting there’s an audience listening to
you.”
“When we did the first take, I remember just feeling like ‘oh boy, that didn’t come out like I wanted it to,” says Scott Koop, host of The Weekly Well. “I knew what I wanted to say and I had it down on paper, but when you’re [in front of] the camera you’re not just gonna sit there and read it from a piece of paper.”
When the pilot is recorded and completed in post-production, our team will review it and suggest long-term changes and/or additions to the program. One of the main things we always look for in a new project is keeping the Gospel message relevant.
“You’re speaking into people's lives,” says Jolly. “We just have to believe that God is there and He is giving us the opportunity to spread the Good News.”
Once the review is complete, we establish terms with the new producer and a new Square One project is born.
